So in honor of the imminently doomed Top Gear I got the brilliant(and completely pointless) idea of doing a Top Gear style race from Portland, Oregon to Seattle, Washington. This is a pretty popular trip for people in the Portland area who go up to Seattle to catch a Seahawks/Mariners/Timbers vs Sounders game or just to hang out. I think this is a pretty good option since we have a couple ways to get from Portland to Seattle.
The first option is to drive the 180 mile trip up the I-5 in car. This is usually about a 2:45~ drive but can quickly change with construction/accidents/landslides/rush hour. The second option is flying. There are flights leaving every 30 minutes or so between Portland and Seattle, and these are quick 45 minute flights. Counting in riding public transit to the airport and checking in/boarding would probably put it around the same time as driving. The third option is riding the Amtrak Cascades from Union Station in Portland to King Street Station in Seattle. The train is the slowest of the 3 usually taking about 3 and a half hours or more to make the trek. This option is gonna have to rely on the car or the plane having some sort of delay to have any shot at winning. The starting point would most likely be in downtown Portland within walking distance of Union Station and end near King Street station in Seattle.
Perhaps I can convince some of my friends to take on this epic feat by bribing them with some fancy microbrew of their choice once we get to Seattle. I might even try calculate and compare the overall costs of each trip just for the sake of making this seem useful. Any Pacific Northwest Jalops that would like to try this?

I've done something like this before in fact so has Top Gear.
Rather than Monaco, we were going to Nice. It was Car vs Plane vs Train. I was on the train and was last but by far and away the most comfortable. London to Nice in first class for £73 is a great deal and going from the centre of London to the centre of Nice is so much better than dealing with airport nonsense like getting there two hours early and having to take a hour long bus ride to the hotel.

I'm gonna do a Seattle to Portland stint this Saturday. Of course, I'm not stopping.

I know it's not fastest, but if the car has to stay on I-5 the whole way then my preferred method would be Amtrak. Scenery, legroom, power outlets, wifi, legroom, the ability and freedom to walk around, the dining car, legitimate tables in the dining car, legroom.

Dibs on Amtrak. Even if I lose, I win in comfort!

Amtrak wins in comfort hands down

What about the bus? There's nothing more soul crushing than a ride on a Grey Hound down I5.

I guess I might be interested, was tempted to go from Portland to Seattle by motorcycle. How much is plane?
